And it is also endowed with Black Sea lye and mud – an extraordinary Gift from Heaven!

In this small booklet, we would like to describe important facts about such a product as Black Sea lye and mud, due to the fact that these products are widely known both in our country and among a large number of foreigners from various countries. However, unfortunately, there is a large percentage of people who do not know the healing qualities and properties of Bulgarian mud and lye and these products are not to be underestimated, and this you will see for yourself. Therefore, we decided to make a detailed description of the products containing Pomorie mud and lye and to make this guide, so that you may try their qualities in home settings or in beauty salons.

The Pomorie Lake is a part of the most important wetland complex on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. It is of great importance for Europe being a rare type of ecosystem and a place where 40% of all European bird species can be observed.

The extraction of sea salt in the Pomorie Lake has been practiced for thousands of years and nowadays, the salt pans continue to produce sea salt by solar evaporation. The lake has made the town of Pomorie one of the preferred balneal, SPA and wellness resorts because of the healing properties of the mud extracted there. 

WHAT IS LYE AND MUD?

The Black Sea (Pomorie) lye is a natural product obtained by salt extraction from the Burgas and Pomorie salt lakes. After the natural evaporation of the water from the salt pans and the crystallization of the salt, the latter remains on the surface of the salt layer as a thick, cloudy, oil-like liquid with a yellow-brown colour and a reddish tint.

The healing Pomorie mud is used for maintenance of the musculoskeletal system, the peripheral nervous system, for gynaecological pain, prostatitis in men, as well as for skin problems – psoriasis, neurodermatitis. It also affects all endocrine glands. The most preferred procedures are Jacuzzi with natural brine – water from the Pomorie Lake. It has four times higher salt content than the seawater, and contains trace elements and salts. 

In diluted aqueous solutions, lye is applied by:

♦ mouth rinses for gum diseases
♦ inhalations for diseases of the upper respiratory tract
♦ drinking for diseases of the stomach, intestines, bile ducts, kidneys, urinary tract

In addition to treating problems, lye is also used for beautification. The mother lye – a final product of the salt extraction – is also extremely useful. It is a highly concentrated solution of various ions, has a good anti-inflammatory effect, and is successfully used for problems of the musculoskeletal system, the peripheral nervous system and promotes healthy teeth and oral cavity. Particularly good results are obtained with the use of galvanic current – the so-called lye-phoresis, for joint diseases, arthrosis of the spine, and also in the form of compresses. 

The unique qualities and properties of the lye are due to its rich mineral and organic composition, and as regards the content of biologically active substances, it is significantly superior to the seawater. Its composition is similar to that of the mud solution, which is why it has an effect similar to the healing mud extracted from these lakes.

It is an electrolyte solution containing elements from the entire Mendeleev table, but sodium, chlorine, in the form of a salt solution, calcium, magnesium and iron predominate. They have a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect.

As the lye is a natural product, its colour and smell may vary depending on the precipitations and temperature throughout the year. The lye ‘matures’ and is suitable for cosmetic use (the so-called natural lye) in the period of August – September, when it reaches a certain density and quantitative composition of the active substances. The unique beneficial properties of lye are due to its rich mineral and organic composition. As far as the biologically active substances are concerned, it contains all the components of seawater and natural brine, but in a much higher concentration.

SAFETY:

It is extremely important that after extracting the lye from the pools in which it is stored and before incorporating it into cosmetic products, it is filtered and stabilized within 24 hours. Otherwise, it loses much of its valuable beneficial properties, and a process of putrefaction and crystallisation begins. All products with Black Sea lye and liman mud with our brand are made with stabilized Black Sea (natural) lye, extracted from the pools of Pomorie and Burgas salt pans. Stabilisation and filtration of the lye is a process that removes unwanted impurities and preserves the valuable properties, biologically active substances, minerals and trace elements for a long period of time and at various temperatures. This ensures its safe use in cosmetic and spa procedures, as well as in oral hygiene products. The direct use of lye and mud of uncertain origin from questionable sources, without stabilisation and filtration may have undesirable effects on your health.

LYE COMPOSITION:

The main elements contained in Black Sea lye are calcium, sodium, magnesium, chlorine, bromine, sulphates, hydrocarbonates, many trace elements and organic substances.

The content of magnesium salts – magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate, is the highest. Magnesium is an extremely important element for many processes in the human body. It is needed for the production of energy in cells and the acceleration of metabolism, it plays a major role in the balance of the nervous and muscular systems, reduces muscle pain and prevents cramps, has a beneficial effect on hair, skin and nails.

Stress and fatigue (physical or mental) deplete magnesium from cells in the body. Therefore, after physical or mental exertion, the body needs to be supplied with a sufficient amount of this so valuable mineral. In addition to its rich mineral composition, lye also contains many biologically active substances, such as microalgae (rich in chlorophyll, vitamins, etc.), zooplankton and bacteria that are characteristic of the waters of our salt lakes.

And since sulphur cannot be taken as a medicine, it is primarily applied through balneology and procedures in two forms: mud application (pure mud is applied) and mud bath (mud in salty mineral water).

How to use:

  • Bath – 500-2000 ml of the solution are poured into 60-80 l of water with a temperature about 38 degrees centigrade. The procedure has a duration of about 15-30 minutes after which the body is rinsed thoroughly with water.
  • Local baths – 150-200 ml are poured in water into a suitable container so as to cover the ankles. You can also make baths with lye alone without diluting it in water. The procedure has a duration of 20-30 minutes and is particularly suitable for rheumatic pain in the ankles, as well as against nail fungus.
  • Body frictions – rubbing the body with lye using a sponge. The body is rubbed with a sponge or a cotton cloth soaked with lye. The concentration depends on the sensitivity of the skin with the maximum ratio being 1:5 (lye:water). After a stay of 15-20 minutes, the body is rinsed thoroughly with water without the use of any soaps and shower gels.
  • Compresses – for sore joints, compresses are made with lye warmed to 38-40 degrees in a water bath (in hypertensive patients, lye is not warmed). A cotton cloth or fabric is soaked with lye and the problem area is wrapped twice, insulated with nylon or stretch film and covered with a towel. Compresses are left to stay for 20-40 minutes, one – two times a day. Recommended course – 12-14 procedures. Caution: for varicose veins, make compresses with lye, which is not warmed.

The use of mud is very useful primarily for the musculoskeletal system – knee joint, gonarthrosis, hip joint, the so-called coxarthrosis, diseases of the entire spine – osteochondrosis, of the shoulder joint – periarthritis, bursitis, plexitis, etc. It is useful for diseases of the peripheral nervous system, such as discopathy, disc herniation or complications due to diabetes – diabetic polyneuropathy. This is concerning the musculoskeletal system.

It has a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect. It is applied in the form of compresses to places where there is pain – knees, back, hip and ankle joints. The combination of mud and lye treatment works well as a prophylaxis for various types of diseases.

CAUTION! THERE ARE CONTRAINDICATIONS!!!!!

The use of mud and lye is not recommended in the following cases:

  1. if the patient is currently suffering from an infection or is in the acute stage of a chronic disease.
  • In malignancies 
  • Only certain diseases of the cardiovascular system are contraindicated for a therapy with healing mud. Some of them are a decompensated form of heart failure, unstable angina, as well as grade 3 hypertension.
  • Some thyroid diseases, such as thyrotoxicosis, are also contraindicated.
  • The application of mud and lye is also not recommended for pregnant women and small children.
